How to Add New Name or Correct Details in Ration Card (2026)
Whether you recently had a baby, got married, or found a spelling mistake in your existing card, updating your ration card is mandatory to receive your full grain quota (units). The 2026 NFSA rules strictly require the Aadhaar of the new member to be linked. This guide explains the step-by-step process to add a name (नाम जोड़ना) or correct your details online.
Crucial Rule: If adding a newlywed wife, you must first get a Surrender Certificate (NOC) from her parents’ local supply office proving her name was deleted there. Visit your state’s portal or local CSC, upload these documents, and the District Supply Officer (DSO) will approve the extra unit within 15 to 21 working days.
When do you need to update your Ration Card?
You do not need to wait 5 years. As soon as you get a Bal Aadhaar and Birth Certificate for your newborn, you can add their name to get an extra 5kg ration per month.
A newlywed wife’s name must be officially deleted (surrendered) from her father’s ration card before it can be added to her husband’s card.
If your name, age, or father’s name on the ration card does not match your Aadhaar exactly, your eKYC will fail and grains will be stopped.
If you moved permanently to a new city or ward, you must update your address to officially transfer your card to the local Fair Price Shop (FPS).
Documents Required for Updates
The documents you need depend on the type of correction you are making. Always keep the Original Ration Card and the Head of Family’s Aadhaar ready.
- Original Birth Certificate
- Child’s Aadhaar (Bal Aadhaar is valid)
- Parents’ Aadhaar Cards
- Marriage Certificate (for wife)
- Surrender / Deletion Certificate (कटौती प्रमाण पत्र)
- New Address Proof (e.g. Electricity bill)
Method 1: How to Add Name / Correct Details Online
You can update your ration card details by visiting your state’s food department portal. Note: In some states (like West Bengal or Maharashtra), you can do this yourself via Aadhaar OTP. But in states like UP or Bihar, you must visit a local CSC center because the portal requires a special operator ID.
-
1
Go to nfsa.gov.in click on “Ration Cards”, then “Ration Card Details On State Portals”, and select your state.
-
2
Click on “Citizen Login” and log in using your registered mobile number or Aadhaar OTP. (If your state requires an e-District ID, the CSC operator will log in for you).
-
3
Click on “Card Modification”, “Name Correction”, or “Add New Member” (नए सदस्य जोड़ें) from the dashboard menu.
-
4
Your existing family details will appear on the screen. Click on “Add Member” or click the “Edit” icon next to a name to fix a spelling or age mistake.
-
5
Enter the new details exactly as they appear on the Aadhaar card. Upload the supporting documents (like Birth Certificate or Surrender Slip) in PDF format.
-
6
Click Submit. You will receive an Acknowledgement / Reference Number via SMS. Keep this safe to track your application status!
Method 2: Update offline via CSC or Block Office
If online modification is disabled in your state, or if your Aadhaar is not linked to a mobile number to receive OTPs, you must complete the process offline.
-
1
Visit your nearest Common Service Centre (CSC / जन सेवा केंद्र) or your local Block/Tehsil Supply Office.
-
2
Ask for Form 3 or Form ‘Kha’ (प्रपत्र ‘ख’). If you are unsure, simply ask for the “Ration Card Correction Form”.
-
3
Fill the form in your regional language. Attach self-attested photocopies of the Head of Family’s Aadhaar, the new member’s Aadhaar/Birth certificate, and the Surrender Certificate (if married).
-
4
Submit the form to the CSC operator. Since you don’t have OTP access, they will use a biometric machine to scan the Head of Family’s fingerprint for Aadhaar authentication.
-
5
Once uploaded, they will give you a computer-generated receipt. Keep this safe to track your status.
Pro Tip: The Head of Family (usually the eldest female) MUST be present at the CSC center for the fingerprint scan. You cannot just send the documents with someone else.
